Who Sponsors Your Qatar Work Visa

Nobody gets a Qatar work visa alone. Someone sponsors you.

This is the part that catches most people out. A Qatar work visa is not something you apply for by yourself — it is applied for on your behalf by a sponsoring company that already holds an immigration file. Understanding that changes what you should be doing next.

There is no self-service work visa

You cannot walk into a process, submit your passport and qualifications, and come out with permission to work in Qatar. The application is made by an employer on your behalf. That employer has to be a registered entity in Qatar with an immigration file in good standing. If you have no offer and no company behind you, there is nothing to submit — which is why so much time gets lost waiting for something that was never going to start.

What the sponsoring company must already hold

Before a company can sponsor anyone, its own paperwork has to exist. The authorised signatory needs a Computer Card — the personal immigration ID that ties a human being to the company file. I filed my own through the QFC Client Portal, under e-Services → Immigration → Service Request → the IS-1 form, after incorporating my company at the Qatar Financial Centre in August 2026. Only once that is in place can the company obtain its Employer's Identity Card and start applying for work permits at all.

The one exception: you are the employer

If the sponsoring company is your own, the dependency disappears. You incorporate, the company gets its immigration file, and the company then sponsors your residency. The sequence is fixed and worth memorising: company incorporated → Computer Card → Employer's Identity Card → work permit → medical test and biometrics on the ground → residency card. Each step exists because the one before it exists; skipping ahead is what sends people back to the start.

What that actually changes for you

It moves the timeline from someone else's hands into yours. You stop waiting for a job offer that may never arrive and start running a process you control. It is not free of obligations — a company carries a registered address, accounting and, depending on the regime, audit and insurance requirements. But the question stops being whether anyone will sponsor you, and becomes which structure fits what you intend to do.

If you want that mapped to your own situation rather than in the abstract, talk to our team — we will tell you plainly which route applies to you and what it involves.

Frequently asked

Can I apply for a Qatar work visa myself?

No. The application is made by a sponsoring company registered in Qatar with an immigration file in good standing. An individual has no route to file one alone.

Can I sponsor my own residency through my own company?

Yes — that is the standard route for founders. Once the company is incorporated and holds its immigration file, it sponsors the founder's residency in the same way it would sponsor an employee.

What is a Computer Card?

It is the personal immigration ID of the company's authorised signatory, and it is the piece everything else depends on. I filed mine online through the QFC Client Portal using the IS-1 form.

Do I need to already be in Qatar to start?

Not for the company side. The medical test and biometrics require you to be physically present, but a temporary Computer Card can be issued while in Qatar on any valid visa — full residency is not a prerequisite for it.
