Living in Qatar is a chain of documents that unlock each other.
Moving to Qatar is not one decision, it is a short chain of documents where each one opens the next. Get the order right and it is unremarkable. Get it wrong and you spend months unable to do ordinary things. Here is what that chain actually looks like, from someone in the middle of it.
The residency card is the key to everything
Almost nothing in ordinary life is available before you hold a residency card — the QID. It is what a landlord, a bank, a telecom operator and the health system all ask for. Until it exists, you are a visitor with a suitcase, whatever your intentions are. Which is why the sequence that produces it matters more than any other part of the move: a sponsor, a work permit, a medical examination and biometrics, and only then the card itself.
Your national address is a document, not a detail
Qatar formalises where you live. In my own case, three things had to be delivered as physical originals to the QFC headquarters in Lusail — a National Address form, a Ministry of Interior form and a company letter. No portal upload, no scan. It is a small thing that quietly blocks everything downstream if nobody warns you, and it is one of the few remaining steps where paper still wins over the internet.
Metrash2 runs your daily admin
Once your residency card is issued, a large part of ordinary administration moves into Metrash2, Qatar's official government app — including updating the national address itself. It is worth installing and understanding early rather than treating it as an afterthought, because it becomes the default place where routine matters are handled once the initial setup is behind you.
Health, family and the bank account
Public healthcare in Qatar is very affordable and effectively close to free with a valid health card, which follows from residency. Family members are sponsored after you hold your own residency, not alongside it — your card comes first, theirs follows. A personal bank account also generally waits on the residency card, and on the company side a corporate account often depends on the Computer Card already being in hand, which is one more reason the order is not negotiable.
If you would rather be told the sequence than discover it one blocked step at a time, talk to our team — we handle the chain end to end.
Frequently asked
What do you need to live in Qatar?
A residency card above all — it gates housing, banking, telecoms and health cover. Behind it sit a sponsor, a work permit, a medical examination and biometrics, then a registered national address.
What is the national address and why does it matter?
It is the formal registration of where you live. In my case a National Address form, a Ministry of Interior form and a company letter had to be delivered as physical originals to the QFC headquarters in Lusail — there was no online upload option.
Is healthcare expensive in Qatar?
Public healthcare is very affordable and effectively close to free with a valid health card, which follows from residency. We stay qualitative here rather than quoting a figure that would not survive your specific situation.
Can I bring my family at the same time?
Family members are sponsored once you hold your own residency, not alongside it. Your card comes first; theirs follows from it.
